Report of III Convocation 2012

Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune celebrated its 3rd Convocation Ceremony on Saturday June 9, 2012. The Chief Guest for the ceremony was Her Excellency Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil, the President of India. Other guests of honour included His Excellency Shri. K. Sankaranarayanan, Governor of Maharashtra; Dr. Devisingh Shekhawat, Eminent Educationist; His Excellency Dr. D. Y. Patil, Governor of Tripura; Shri. Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission, Government of India; Shri. Mohan Dharia, Former Cabinet Minister and Eminent Environmentalist; and Shri. Harshavardhan Patil, Minister, Parliamentary Affairs and Cooperation, Maharashtra Government. Dr. P. D. Patil , presided over the function.
As the Procession of the Hon’ble Guests, the Deans of Faculties, and members of the Board of Management and Academic Council led by Mr. M. S. Phirange, Controller of Examinations, reached the dais, the Convocation began with the National Anthem. It was followed by the melodious rendering of the Vidyapeeth Geet. Her Excellency the President of India lighted the lamp and then Hon’ble Dr. P. D. Patil declared the Convocation open, as requested by the DPU Registrar Dr. Pranita Kulkarni.
Dr. P. N. Razdan, Vice Chancellor, DPU, then presented the University Report comprising of the activities at the University since the last Convocation. In the report, he took a quick review of the research activities, international collaborations, various grants received by the university, and social interface at Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth by providing free treatment to indoor patients, including sophisticated investigations. He also focused on the achievements and honours brought to the Vidyapeeth by the faculty and students alike. The report closed on his suggestion to the graduands to make the most of their degrees by being worthy of people’s love and respect.
After the University report, all the Chief Guests were duly felicitated by Dr. P. D. Patil. Then came the proud moment of conferment of degrees. One by one, the Deans of Faculties presented the graduands to Dr. P. D. Patil, on whom the degrees were conferred by Dr. P. D. Patil. During the Convocation, 663 graduands from the faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, Management, Allied Medical Sciences and Nursing were awarded their degrees. After the conferment, Dr. P. D. Patil delivered the Exhortation advising the alumni to follow the path of truth, learning, morality and prosperity.
Next came the award of the first PhD degrees to two faculty members of Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth at the hands of Hon’ble Dr. P. D. Patil. Both the recipients were from the Faculty of Medicine- Mrs. Neelambala Prasad, Department of Physiology and Mrs. Savita Vivekanand Jadhav, Department of Microbiology.
Later, following 17 gold medalists were bestowed their medals at the hands of the Chief Guest

Following the Gold Medalists, Shri Mohan Dharia, Former Cabinet Minister and Former Deputy Chariman, Planing Commission, Government of India was awarded the Degree of Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) for his outstanding work towards environmental protection and rejuvenation and generating public awareness regarding the same. In his reply, Shri Mohan Dharia stated that he has been showered with love by numerous people so he is usually reluctant to accept honours. However, his close and prolonged association with the DPU Founder Dr. P. D. Patil Dr. D.Y. Patil made him accept the degree. He thanked DPU wholeheartedly for the Degree.
Shri Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission, Government of India was also awarded the Degree of Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) for his scholarship and exceptional contribution to economic policy and panning and supporting activities for the promotion of higher education in India. Replying to the honour, Shri Montek Singh Ahluwalia also thanked DPU for the degree, especially for conferring it on him in the presence of Her Excellency The President of India. He congratulated the graduates and particularly their parents because in the children, their dreams come true.
Dr. P. D. Patil then addressed the audience. He wished the graduands productive and successful careers ahead. He stated that DPU has grown not just in size but also in quality, thanks to the zealous work by all the faculty and staff. Briefly acknowledging the contributions of every luminary, he cited focus, dedication, commitment, continuity, perseverance and the strength to work unfazed as the common qualities in their lives that students can imitate. He stated that the graduands are the stewards of this nation and custodians of its rich tradition. Acquiring a degree is not the end but beginning of life so they should never be complacent.
His Excellency the Governor of Tripura Padmashree Dr. D.Y. Patil, in his brief speech, told the students that life is like a journey that passes through many phases where they will come across many people with different value system. They have to be true and faithful to themselves and their conscience.
The Convocation Address by Her Excellency Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil The President of India was something everybody was looking forward to. She started by congratulating the graduands and took due note of the higher number of women awardees of the evening. Subsequently, she commented that men have to work harder henceforth. In her succinct speech, she touched on the need to amalgamate the traditional medical wisdom and the technological advancements in the modern medical fields and regularly updating the medical curricula to incorporate the newest developments, especially because in India, there is tremendous scope for the medical field. She stated that each new doctor must work in the rural area to get the full grasp of the Indian medical scenario and its challenges and also cautioned that money should not be their only focus. She expected an institute like DPU to generate public awareness and collaborate with other national and international institutes for the betterment of medical education. Citing the existence of Distance Learning facility at DPU, she stated that the technology could be used to help the needy in distant areas by way of tele-medicine. To the young graduands, she advised to touch a chord in the patients’ hearts while treating them so as to achieve success. She also highlighted the importance of the nursing profession as a link between doctors and patients. Her Excellency’s speech was extremely well received by one and all.
Following this poignant speech, Dr. P. D. Patil declared the Convocation closed.
The Procession retired after the National Anthem.
